Some residencies sell themselves on their facilities. Others on their funding. Pepper House sells itself on something harder to quantify - a sense of place so thick you can almost taste it. And in Fort Kochi, that taste is black pepper, sea salt, and centuries of trade winds.

The Pepper House Residency is run by the Kochi Biennale Foundation, the organization behind the Kochi-Muziris Biennale - India's largest and most significant contemporary art event. The residency sits inside a roughly 300-year-old waterfront property consisting of two historic godowns (the Indian word for dockside warehouses) with Dutch-style clay roofs, separated by a large courtyard. One godown faces the street. The other overlooks the harbor.

The Biennale Connection / बिएनाले का संबंध

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale was founded in 2010 by Mumbai-based artists of Keralan origin - Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu. After Kerala's culture minister approached them about starting an international art project, they proposed something bold: a biennale in Kochi modeled on Venice, drawing on Kochi's ancient history as a spice-trade port.

The inaugural edition in December 2012 was spread across 13 revived heritage sites in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, drawing thousands. The Pepper House Residency followed in 2013 and has since hosted approximately 50 artists from India and abroad.
