Khoj International Artists' Association is, quite simply, the most important space for experimental contemporary art in South Asia. Founded in 1997 in New Delhi, it has spent nearly three decades nurturing artists who take risks - the kind of artists who don't fit neatly into gallery boxes.

The Origin Story / स्थापना की कहानी

Here's the thing about Khoj that still amazes people: it was co-founded by a group of young, relatively unknown artists who would go on to become some of the biggest names in global contemporary art. Subodh Gupta, Anita Dube, Bharti Kher, Manisha Parekh, Prithpal Singh Ladi, and Ajay Desai - together with director Pooja Sood, who still runs the organization - came together after a meeting with British collector Robert Loder of the Triangle Arts Trust at Eicher Gallery in Delhi.

Their first workshop was a two-week affair in 1997 at Sikribagh, on the edges of Modinagar, an industrial town north of Delhi. It was raw, intense, and nothing like the polished art world events happening elsewhere. That spirit hasn't left.

The Location / स्थान

In 2002, Khoj moved into its permanent home in Khirki Village, a 13th-century urban village in south Delhi. The building was later renovated by Studio Lotus in 2012, fusing two adjoining rundown buildings into one using recycled architectural elements. From the rooftop terrace, you can see the Khirkee Masjid - a beautiful mosque built in 1380 AD - in the distance.
