Hampi Art Labs launched in February 2024, the brainchild of Sangita Jindal and her daughter Tarini Jindal Handa. Sangita Jindal is the publisher of Art India magazine, a prominent art collector, and the wife of steel magnate Sajjan Jindal. The residency is an initiative of the JSW Foundation, the social development arm of the JSW Group - one of India's largest steel conglomerates.

The Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th century) built its capital here, and at its peak it was one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The ruins of over 1,600 surviving structures - temples, royal enclosures, bazaars, water systems - are scattered across the landscape. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
